An Extension Service is a non-profit organization that partners a county with a state university to offer valuable services to the community.
Huh?
Well, here's how the USDA describes it:
Cooperative Extension Services offices are conveniently located in courthouses, post offices, or other local government buildings to improve the quality of people's lives by providing research-based knowledge (emphasis added by me) to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of families, communities and agriculture enterprises. Extension experts focus on, among other subjects, food safety and quality, plight of young children, revitalizing rural America, sustainable agriculture, and waste management.
Programs offered at my local Extension Office, Southern Oregon Research & Extension Center (SOREC):
4-HFamily & Community Health Programs
Master Food Preserver Training
Master Gardener Training
Small Farms
Livestock & Forage
Land Steward Program
Forestry & Natural Resources Program
Citizen Fire Academy Program
Master Recycling Program
Viticulture
Your local Extension Service may offer different programs than those listed above. Some services are programs that require enrollment for weeks or months, while other services are evening or weekend classes.
To find your local Extension Service a simple internet search is all you need. Or you may click here.
I encourage you to learn from the professionals and take advantage of what your local Extension Service can offer you!
